Pretend的用法

《韦氏高阶》例句：

He pretended to make a phone call.

to make a phone call 显然是动态动词的不定式。该句为一般过去时，可以改为一般将来时：

He will pretend to make a phone call.

但不能用一般现在时：

He pretends to make a phone call. (X)

你说词典查不到你需要的例句，原因并不是pretend不能后接动态动词的不定式，而是一般现在时的制约。一般现在时表示说话时发生的事件只能是演示或解说一类的动作，而且该动作只能是短暂动作，在说活时发生并结束。而假装打电话这个动作不可能在说话的同时发生并结束。所以你看不到或很少看到一般现在时pretends后接动态动词的例句。如果你把pretends改为现在进行时，你会找到很多例句的。以下为COCA例句。

顺便说一句，pretend后接动态动词的不定式，不定式的动作并不是后于谓语动词时间，而是与pretend的动作是同时的。由于假装做的动作实际并没有发生，所以用to do不定式表示。因此，如果不定式的动作为延续性动词，你无法用一般现在时pretends。静态动词的不定式则不然，pretend只需表示假装处于某状态或具有某特征即可，用一般现在时没有问题。
